THIS PAGE IS ONLY PARTLY UPDATED FOR THE 2018 SNOW SEASON ALTHOUGH WE EXPECT ONLY SMALL FURTHER CHANGES –
EG MURRAYS COACHES HAVE NOT YET PUBLISHED 2018 INFORMATION
Southern Cross Alpine Lodge is located within Kosciuszko National Park in Southern NSW per maps below. For Snow Season travel to Perisher & Smiggin Holes info, see
www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/Kosciuszko-National-Park/Visitor-Info#Getting-there-and-parking, www.perisher.com.au/plan-your-trip/new-to-perisher/getting-here, www.greyhound.com.au/specials/snow-express-2018, www.murrays.com.au/SnowEarlyBirdSpecial.aspx, and generally dig around on the Internet.
Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays you can book NSW TrainLink with connecting bus to Jindabyne - see www.nswtrainlink.info/destinations and search for Jindabyne. Also see www.alpinecharters.com.au who may offer Jindabyne to Smiggin Holes, including on the School Bus (school days only).
Per www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/Kosciuszko-National-Park/Visitor-Info#Fees-and-passes and www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/passes-and-fees/annual-passes there is a vehicle entry fee for Kosciuszko National Park (even if parking at Sawpit Creek). A 20% discount applies to Seniors Card holders for annual entry passes (requires rego papers in name of Seniors Card holder) and Pensioner Concession Card holders may be eligible for free entry. No need to pre-purchase as you can purchase at the Sawpit Creek Entry Station.
From the June LWE till the October LWE, snow chains must be carried (except AWD & 4WD), usually the road up to Southern Cross is closed to traffic, there is no free overnight parking available within Smiggin Holes or Perisher (except sometimes very early and late snow season), and only VERY limited $30 per night parking at the Smiggins Hotel which CANNOT be reserved. If you do drive to Smiggins, there is a 15 minute drop off zone behind the Smiggin Holes Hotel just past their car park.
Many of our snow season guests take Ski Tube to Perisher (no NPWS car entry fee & no snow chains required, but only operating till Monday 2 October) and then the free daytime (late season only till 5.30pm, later when night skiing is on) shuttle bus to Smiggins. You can pay Hans Oversnow (southern end of Ski Tube Perisher terminal ph (02) 6457 5334 & 0418 485 144) for 4WD or oversnow transport from Perisher to Southern Cross. Parking at Jindabyne and catching an Alpine Charters bus direct to Smiggins may be a cheaper alternative but you should book ahead on 0414 400 378 – you may be able to coordinate and share a booking with other Southern Cross guests.
